We make objects. Tables, chairs, pieces that serve a purpose — and hold their own. They’re made to last — in structure, in comfort, in relevance. We’ve worked with the same architects and designers for over 30 years.

That kind of longevity is not strategy. It’s chemistry.

We don’t follow trends.

We follow time.

Minimal, not sterile. Functional, not blank. Made to live with, not just to look at.

We don’t do slogans.

We do durability.

GRAÇA / FOUNDER

Graça Cardoso da Silva founded the company. Portuguese by birth, trained in Business in Texas, moved to Mexico City at 17. There, she discovered craft — and never let it go. In 1991, she brought Central American furniture to Europe for the first time. Later, she helped define a new aesthetic: quiet lines, natural veneers, honest materials. First produced in Asia. Then, entirely in Portugal. Risk was always part of the process.

Family

HMD is the story of three women, two generations.

NINA / MANAGER

Nina Hedderich, her younger daughter, was raised around factories. Materials and processes were part of her daily language. She chose management and marketing — not as a compromise, but as a way to bring structure to creative ambition. She knows how to turn instinct into direction, and direction into momentum. She could have gone elsewhere. She stayed. That says enough.

MÓNICA / ART DIRECTOR

Mónica Hedderich is the eldest, and Creative Director since 2014. Drawing came first. Then painting. Then everything else. Her childhood moved between workshops and museums, factories and airports. Later, came Communication Design in Barcelona, Product Design in Porto. She returned with her own point of view: visual, precise, emotionally tuned.

Today, Mónica leads HMD’s design language — with the structure of a trained designer and the instinct of someone who grew up inside the process. She works from the belief that form and feeling are inseparable. Her BOLOCHA lamp for French brand HISLE showed how simplicity can still have soul. Her MIRA table showed the same restraint. The LOLA table, still part of our collection after 25 years, proves that when the shape is right, it stays.

Trends don’t matter much to her. Material does. So does function. So does the way objects carry memory. Under her direction, HMD doesn’t just make furniture. It builds vocabulary.

Exibitions

For 25 years, we’ve shown in Paris and Milan. Not for routine. For discipline. Being among the best keeps us honest. Some pieces have made that same journey. The LOLA table, in the collection for over two decades, is still evolving. That’s the point.

Our Why

Our why____The mother, the daughter and the spark. These three are the engines behind HMD.

Welcome to HMD Furniture. Established in 1991 by the visionary Graça Cardoso da Silva, our journey began with a passion for quality craftsmanship and good design. With a keen eye for aesthetics and a dedication to excellence, Graça laid the foundation for what would become the beloved family business. Her team-leading experience in building and transforming a huge new business model in one of the biggest retail companies in the country, earned her a clear strategy focused vision that has brought HMD to where it is today.

Building upon her mother's legacy, Mónica, after graduating in Design from Barcelona, infused her creativity and expertise into our brand. As our head designer, Mónica shapes the identity of HMD Furniture, curating collections that blend sophistication with practicality and developing the voice and brand of HMD Furniture.

[Since a little child, Monica brought her paper and pencil everywhere, her practice has led her to understand what she wanted to do in the future. In parallel, she rejoiced when spending hours in the middle of wood dust and talking with carpenters and architects building products and spaces alike. In her teenage years, she fell in love with Graphic Design and went to Barcelona to follow this creative energy. There she developed a very personal style between the warm color and the life of the city, the love for illustrations and typography drifted her apart from furniture for a while.

She left Barcelona to build a name for herself in the marketing and advertising field and, after a few years as a brilliant marketeer, she finally returned to the family tradition of furniture design and craft.

Now, the whole company has Monica’s view and talent on it. Every visual detail is supervised and approved by her and the brand showcases clearly what is on her mind.]

Like any winning team, we needed a constant reminder of the dynamic edge of the market therefore, Nina, coming from an economic background, joined the team to develop new strategies in the realms of commerce, finance, and business operations.

Together, we strive to bring our customers solutions for their projects that are aligned with their taste and philosophy when creating interior spaces.

Certified materials. Thoughtful packaging. All expected. But the real work is deeper — noble raw materials, built to endure. The most sustainable object is the one you never need to replace.

Sustainability

100% Portuguese production

local suppliers and production ensure a reduction in transport emissions and transparent traceability of the products.

Using waste to create beauty

materials like MDF, engineered marble or fabrics made from recycled fibres are a way to give good use to something that would be transformed in waste otherwise.

MDF is made from wood fibre, shavings and sawdust – all parts of the wood that are not normally used. This makes it an excellent high quality and versatile product for furniture building. Although it is not recyclable after use, it is biodegradable so, after its long life, it can be a part of nature once again.

Engineered marble

made from stone waste, with 70% of its products coming from Portuguese or Spanish mines, this material allows the repurposed waste from other production lines.

European fabrics

working with mills located within the EU, our fabric selection is focused on suppliers whose practices are aligned with a green vision. This reflects on the process of transforming yarn into beautiful fabrics through upcycling bio-based materials, staying true to ethical sourcing and zero waste processes.

Fair business

although we have reduced to one our yearly participation in fairs – we only do the Salone International del mobile in Milan – this is usually a very wasteful process as it implies building a real scenario for a week of existence. Because this was always on our minds, we researched and finally found a partner that allowed us to reuse 97% of the stand materials year after year. Our design team is repeatedly challenged to find new ways to show our work without adding any extra waste to the world.

Ageless design

focusing on the best quality and a design that is not in itself the star, we contribute to less consumption and better selection - therefore a more sustainable society. We believe in creating icons and perpetual collections, distancing ourselves from fashionable and temporary products.

Detail

oriented practices and quality standards. We do not overlook the details that add value to our products, we know that a product is a construct of the materials it is made of, the thoughtful work of the person who designed it for its best use, and the way it is produced, packed and delivered to the customer. Every piece is important to us because it represents very transparently our work and our brand’s mission.
